The Secretary of the Association of Muslim Schools (AMS) Ebrahim Ansur says while the first Muslim schools pre-dispensation were established by pioneers to avoid learners being influenced by foreign ideologies and an alien cultural outlook, with the dawn of democracy, communities felt it was necessary to establish Muslim independent schools just as other faith-based schools in the country.
Ansur and Abdullah Sujee from the Roshnee Islamic School were speaking to Radio Islam on Wednesday about an article penned by Nuraan Davids, a professor of philosophy of education at Stellenbosch University.

Durban - Cosatu wants the government to enforce new guidelines on the reopening of schools saying it should not be âpersuadingâ them as the rule of law should apply equally to all citizens.
This comes after the Department of Basic Education delayed the reopening of schools by two weeks in order to monitor the severity of the coronavirus.
The labour federation stood with a statement by Basic Education Deputy Minister Reginah Mhaule that private schools that have already reopened would be persuaded with the assistance of the National Alliance for Independent Schools Association to follow the new protocols.

An eminent professor of economics at Stellenbosch University has urged the department of basic education to reopen schools as soon as possible, in the interests of pupils.
Servaas van der Berg said “being out of school is bad for children mentally, psychologically and socially, and undermines their long-term academic and economic prospects”.
