The Public Protector’s office has ordered the CEO of Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital to facilitate the reburial of a deceased person who was given a pauper s funeral because the institution failed to notify the family of his death.
The hospital was plunged into crisis on Monday when a 10-metre-long copper pipe supplying oxygen into the main intensive care unit (ICU) was stolen on Monday, leading to the emergency evacuation of 20 patients.
Patients at one of South Africa’s biggest health facilities have been turned away while motorists have been advised to avoid the area as scores of public servants affiliated to various unions have closed several routes and the main entrance to the facility.
