Penn State students and community members work tirelessly to enhance the lives of children and families impacted by childhood cancer through THON. But Penn State’s local connection with pediatric cancer runs even deeper through an initiative called the Jared Box Project.
The Jared Box Project was started locally in 2001 in memory and honor of Jared McMullen, a 5-year-old boy who was diagnosed with an incurable brainstem tumor in 1999.
“Jared always took a backpack filled with toys [to the hospital],” Jared Box Project Executive Director Cindy Kolarik said. “Jared actually noticed other kids that looked bored or sad or lonely, and he shared his toys with them. That always stuck in the back of my mind. Even though he was going through all that, he was able to look around and care for others.”
If you asked freshman Madison Miller to describe her first year as a Penn Stater in one word, she would tell you it’s been “unique.” But that would be an understatement at best.
As a freshman broadcast journalism major, she secured an internship with Penn State Athletics, joined CommRadio, Centre News Digest, PSNews, and the Association for Women in Sports Media (AWSM). But it isn’t just her extensive involvement that’s contributed to a crazy first year.

Penn State’s Board of Trustees on Tuesday night unanimously approved an increase to room and board rates for the 2021-22 academic year.
The adopted changes work out to a $203 increase per student per semester for those paying for a standard double room and mid-level meal plan, a 3.45% increase over 2020-21.
Under the now-approved rates, the average student will pay $6,079 to live on campus next school year.
About 2.3% of the increased costs will be used to fund predicted rises in operating costs for Housing and Food Services. The remaining adjustment will help pay for plans to expand the department’s operations and support renovation projects across campus, including East and Pollock residence halls.
