The city of Ceres is hosting a contest to name the new park in the Eastgate area of Ceres and has set a deadline of Friday, Feb. 19.
The city had planned for the park to be named Eastgate Park until then Councilman Channce Condit suggested the park be named after the late Guillermo Ochoa, a councilman who served six years until his defeat in the November 2011 election. The council preferred the public to submit ideas, which culminated in the contest. The suggestions will be evaluated by an ad hoc subcommittee consisting of Mayor Javier Lopez, Councilman Bret Silveira, city Recreation Manager Matthew Lohr, and citizens Lisa Mantarro Moore, Brandy Meyer and Gene Yeakley. A trackhoe finishes excavating a small corner of the two-acre site on the east side of Eastgate Plaza in East Alton where the MCT Eastgate Park & Ride facility is being built. Most of the underground improvements, such as sewer and drainage, are finished, as is the rocking of the surface which precedes paving. The $1,596,000 project on Illinois 3 includes 104 parking spaces, a waiting building for drivers, video surveillance and restrooms.
EAST ALTON Work is progressing on the $1.5 million Eastgate Park & Ride facility in East Alton.
In November, the Madison County Transit (MCT) Board of Trustees were joined by local elected officials, contractors and the owners of nearby Eastgate Plaza for an official “ground breaking” for the facility. The Park & Ride facility is expected to be completed this fall.
