As many of you know, we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to professor gallagher. He was the founding director of the nau center, retired just last spring from uva where he held the john l. Nau chair in Civil War History from 1999 to 2018. He is the author or editor of at least 39 books, including the union war, the american war and most recently civil war places which, too, is in the back, beautiful book, his son will took the photographs and this is an absolute treasure if you havent had a chance to see it yet. So ill get us rolling. Were going to have a pretty informal discussion here where well throw out some questions that have occurred to all of us as weve been listening to these wonderful talks and the first question i will throw out, i think, i trust has occurred to many of you in the audience, and that is its really aimed primarily at gary and christopher, and that is are your two interpretations garys with the emphasis on centrality of the theater on the east and then west. Are they at odds or reconcilable . Im happy to have you go first. Set the tone. I think its all in the definition of the word is. I actually dont disagree with gary on a lot of points. The war was. Without the Virginia Campaign and without the successes that grant brought to it, that stalemate could have continued longer. Im not certainly exactly what sherman could have done had grant not had the successes that he had by bringing a different type of war fair. My point is not to critique garys emphasis on the east i
Eisenhower foundation is raising money to conduct a comprehensive exhibit renovation. It is the Largest Campaign in our foundations 73 year history and the First Comprehensive exhibit renovation in more than 45 years. The new exhibits will be unveiled this summer. We have been so encouraged the by the response we have received thus far. I am pleased to report we have raised 98 of our goal. [applause] meredith we want to finish the campaign by june 6 so we can publicly announce this to all veterans who join us at the eisenhower president ial library and museum to commemorate the 75th anniversary of dday. Many of our friends have already made a gift to the renovation and i would like to thank you for your trust and participation in this project. This is Heritage Hall, the museum of mayo clinic that was established with a gift from john and lillian matthews. They are patients of mayo clinic and they had a unique vision. They said we want to add more voices to the choir and tell the Great Stories of mayo through contemporary museum exhibits, designs, films and products like that.
