St Helens Southern Gateway scheme gets the green light

Plans for Lea Green have been officially submitted AROUND £14.8m has been secured to deliver the St Helens Southern Gateway scheme, which will see significant improvements to area’s transport network. The council will deliver £4.8m of improvements to encourage safer cycling routes and to make walking routes safer, all helping people to get to and from Lea Green Station, opening the wider region to residents. The funding – allocated from the Liverpool City Region Transforming Cities Fund – will be used to introduce six new cycle routes and improve the junction at the Bull and Dog roundabout to improve safety for all road users.

Plans to transform St Helens Lea Green station

  St Helens Borough Council announced today it was launching a consultation to seek views on plans to deliver sustainable and active transport improvements at one of the town s busiest railway stations, which is a key link to the cities of Liverpool and Manchester. The Eastern Region Interchange and Connectivity scheme – a partnership between St Helens Council, the Liverpool City Region and Northern Rail – proposes a number of upgrades at Lea Green. Since 2018 there has been more services stop at the station, including the Transpennine Express, offering wider opportunities to travel across the country. Prior to the pandemic, there were issues regarding the car park becoming overcrowded, with commuters highlighting the issue to the Star.
