Republican and Democrat congressmen call for extending mine reclamation program

U.S. Reps. Matt Cartwright and Glenn Thompson, a Republican from Bellefonte, have called for renewal of a program that reclaims mine lands. “We’re on a deadline,” Cartwright, D-8, Moosic, said Wednesday of the Abandoned Mine Land Trust Fund, which expires in September. The trust fund, established in 1977, is financed by a tax on each ton of coal mined. Cartwright said the fund paid to restore thousands of open mine portals, 1,000 miles of dangerous highwalls and restored water polluted by mine drainage. Cartwright said the Arena Hub Plaza in Wilkes-Barre Twp. and distribution centers in Hazleton sit on former mine land.

Water quality and the effluent from two abandoned mine discharge treatment systems are being looked at as is gas withdraw impacts, Lewis said.

Mine-scarred land could serve as sites for solar energy projects

Abandoned mine lands in Northeast Pennsylvania are being surveyed as potential sites for solar energy projects. The Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation is working under a $7,000 mini grant to identify sites that could host massive solar panels. “We have to look at slopes. The land cannot be too steep. Another factor is the proximity to electrical power transmission substations,’’ said Bobby Hughes, executive director of EPCAMR. No sites have been selected yet, Hughes said, but EPCAMR hopes to identify acreage “very soon.’’ Northeast Pennsylvania remains dotted with mining-related land sites, most often scarred by more than one century of anthracite mining and production. Thousands of acres have been reclaimed, but culm banks and sloping acreage remain.
