When it comes to pandemic damage, Ridgecrest has fared better than many places, according to Mark Schniepp.
Ridgecrest lost far fewer jobs and rebounded more quickly than the rest of Kern County and California and can likely look forward to a good future along with the rest of the Indian Wells Valley assuming recovery from the pandemic continues, he said.
Schniepp, who is Director of the California Economic Forecast in Santa Barbara, was the keynote speaker at the virtual Indian Wells Valley Economic Outlook Conference Feb. 25.
Employment in Ridgecrest only went down around 4% at the worst last April, as compared to nearly 16% for both the state and Kern County at the same time. Job loss was at its greatest shortly after the first statewide shelter-in-place order went into effect last March.

TEHACHAPI, Calif. (KERO) â The City of Tehachapi has decided to keep its farmer s market event this summer. The city council approved the plan from the dissolving Main Street Tehachapi non-profit organization.
According to a press release, Main Street asked the city if it was interested in taking over the market operations this year. The organization will help in the transition.
These folks are especially valuable in unincorporated towns like Mojave which lack many city services.
Ted Hodgkinson of Mojave is a classic example of someone who spends many hours every week keeping active in Mojave as an officer of two local organizations, an instructor at Cerro Coso Community College, a member of the Mojave Unified School Board of trustees and helping local folks who need assistance.
Ted, who was born in El Reno, Oklahoma, in 1947, arrived in Mojave with his family in 1954 where he entered first grade at Mojave Elementary School.
