(AP) In four months, the city and Salvation Army of Dane County have turned a vacated former nursing home in Madison into a shelter that will better serve 35 of the neediest local homeless families. The city in January acquired the 36,192-square-foot former Karmenta Center, set on 3.3 acres at 4502 Milwaukee St., for $2.75 million. Since then, it has been refurbishing the former nursing home so the Salvation Army, which has long provided shelter to homeless single women and families at 630 E. Washington Ave., can move families there from hotels being used during the COVID-19 pandemic.

School bus crashes into snow bank on East Washington Avenue February 4, 2021 5:27 PM Brandon Arbuckle Updated: MADISON, Wis. A school bus went into a snow bank along East Washington Avenue on Thursday. Dane County dispatch said it received a call at 4:43 p.m. for an incident involving a privately owned bus on East Wash and Dickinson Street. According to Madison police, the crash happened on the 1200 block of East Wash. Police said Madison Metro helped transport the adults who were inside the bus to a warming shelter. An incident report said no students were involved in the crash, but one person suffered minor injuries.
