Wednesday, April 21, 2021 Southwest distance standout Travis Sickles won the 2-mile at the East Newton Relays last week, breaking the school record with a time of 9:59.60. The old mark was 10:01.06 set in 2004 by Daniel Stubblefield, son of former Southwest track and cross country coach Lee Stubblefield. “This is one of many goals Travis has set for 2021,” said Steve Voyak, Southwest track coach. “It’s amazing to watch history unfold right in front of your eyes but he is not close to being done. He wants to get back to Jeff City and compete for All-State honors.” Sickles, a senior, is among the Class 2 leaders statewide in both the mile and two-mile. He also anchors a strong 4x800 relay team for the Trojans. Sickles ran a 2:02 anchor split at Clever last week as Southwest defeated Hartville by 3 seconds.
