A circuit court judge has vacated the results of the city of Tuscaloosa’s District 7 City Council results, clearing the path for a special election to determine who will hold this seat.
Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Robert S. Vance issued his decision Thursday, less than a week after final summary judgment arguments were submitted by attorneys for incumbent Councilor Sonya McKinstry and political newcomer Cassius Lanier, who won by 28 votes.
Days after her defeat, McKinstry filed a legal challenge to the election citing Lanier’s legal eligibility to hold the office based on his prior felony convictions and asked the court to name her the winner.
There are 10 days left until the 2021 Tuscaloosa municipal election. With recent changes to a local polling location, knowing the correct spot for voters to cast their ballots is imperative to an efficient voting plan.
Districts 1 through 6 will vote in the same places as in years past. Here are the polling locations for those zones:
District 1: (TDOT) Building Auditorium
District 2: McDonald Hughes Community Center
District 3: Church of the Highlands
District 4: Calvary Baptist Church Annex
District 5: Alberta Baptist Church
District 6: Belk Activity Center

District 7, however, had to change its polling location due to an incapacitating fire at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in 2019. District 7 constituents should now go to vote at East McFarland Baptist Church.
