Permanent homeless campsite in Yreka should be ready before year s end

For months, the city has worked to find a place to move homeless camps from current sites on Campus Drive and the Greenhorn Dam. A permanent site next to the Beacon of Hope s shelter, which is under construction, should be ready in October or November. Kegg said the site would be cleaned on Saturday. What Yreka citizens are saying about the homeless issue At the meeting, a several citizens expressed concerns about the increase in the homeless around town, especially in the Deer Creek area, where a number of camps, trailers, and RVs have set up shop.  Residents told of garbage and glass being strewn around the area, dogs roaming loose, and loud parties late into the night. Others told of homeless people knocking on their doors in the middle of the night asking to use the restroom or for water.

Homelessness in Yreka: Council remains undecided on temporary campsite

The council also discussed a new potential site owned by the city on the corner of East Greenhorn Road and Mill Street. Kegg said the building there is currently being rented for storage space. It would take time for the current tenant to move, so the site is probably not feasible. Eventually, a permanent urban campsite will be established next to the Beacon of Hope s future homeless shelter, which is being built off of Foothill Drive, in the area of the now-abandoned Yreka Western Railroad s Blue Goose Excursion Train site. Kegg said on Friday morning, they hope the permeant location can start being used in October.
