Jack Coughlin’s campaign against litter, particularly “nip” liquor bottles, has gained national recognition, even as he remains confined to a hospital bed.
On Thursday, Coughlin was awarded the Pat Franklin Courageous Spirit Award from the Container Recycling Institute, a California-based nonprofit. He was paralyzed in January after being struck by a car while picking up roadside trash in Agawam.
Coughlin, who turned 78 in the days after the collision, was well-known in town for walking the streets every day, picking up litter. He was also an activist for environmental and sportsmen’s causes, and one of the leaders in efforts to improve the Medina Street boat ramp in Chicopee. While raising a family in Springfield, Coughlin had also been active in neighborhood associations in East Forest Park and Sixtee

AGAWAM Unable to move his arms and legs, voiceless and confined to a hospital bed, Jack Coughlin is still leading the movement to keep his town clean.
Coughlin was struck by a vehicle on Jan. 20 on Mill Street near Kensington Street in the Feeding Hills section of town. Despite the cold weather and waning light, he was doing what he did almost every day: walking the streets of his town, picking up trash.
In the weeks since the accident, he’s remained paralyzed and under close care at Baystate Medical Center. But his friends and supporters around town have been busy ensuring that his work goes on.

SPRINGFIELD The City Council approved special permits Monday for a housing development at the historic Knox automobile buildings following a discussion that included strong praise for the project as well as strong concerns about neighborhood input and the developer’s track record on hiring minority contractors.
The special permits for the 96-unit affordable housing complex, at two vacant buildings at 53 Wilbraham Road and 42 Waltham Ave., were approved by votes of 10-2 but not before the developer warned that applications for state tax credits needed for the $54 million project would be in jeopardy if

had a pretty perfect day, albeit windy. he had a speech that, as you played parts of it, was very, very tough on president obama, and he had a good crowd. the question is, can you sell it all across new hampshire, can you sell it all across iowa? this is a man who intends to run this time on jobs and the economy. he is literally selling his credentials that he has been a businessman, he says, who has created jobs. he s been a massachusetts governor and he says has a successful run there. so he s going to run as the experienced one against a president that spent too much money and not created enough jobs. he set the plate. he also sent a signal to those on outskirts of this and not in. it s getting time. he is as close as it gets to a front runner in this race and if he is off and running, it is very close to the time ors have to get in or stay out. or stay out. i know you ve been there all day long. i want to give the folks at home a flavor, more as to what mitt romney said
