A deal meant to put low-income housing on land now owned by Forsyth County on Highland Avenue fell through on Thursday, when the expected buyer refused to accept a contract
A 1.3-acre vacant lot stands at the epicenter of plans to develop property in East Winston near the Innovation Quarter, with two church-related groups vying to acquire the site from Forsyth County government.
The bidding comes at a time when East Winston is on the verge of seeing a game-changing 200-unit apartment complex built to provide affordable housing in a $40 million investment.
The county has not even decided to sell the property, but the groups have differing ideas on what should go there: The development team associated with United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, which is building the apartments, sees the site as a park envisioned by the East End Master Plan for transforming the neighborhood.

Proposal goes before city council to rezone the area between Third and Fifth Streets east of U.S. 52 Walt Unks
A unanimous rezoning vote on the Winston-Salem City Council Monday night cleared the way for a major redevelopment project in East Winston that is expected to bring 325 new housing units east of U.S. 52 near the downtown Innovation Quarter.
Apartments, townhouses and retail and office development are now approved for a seven-acre site just east of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church and stretching from Third to Fifth Street.
Mayor Allen Joines is calling the project one that can achieve a long-stated goal of city leaders to extend the benefits of the Innovation Quarter to a nearby majority-Black neighborhood thatâs also in need of more decent yet affordable housing.
