WORCESTER The city manager’s announcement earlier this month that the district’s current school resource officer program would be phased out by the end of the year fulfills a desire by many advocates to see a reduced role for police in schools.
But the resource officer model still has supporters in the education world and has even been expanding in some parts of the region in recent years.
Even Worcester’s superintendent, while supportive of City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. s call to develop a new safety model for the district by the close of 2021, is still a believer in the benefit of having a daily police presence in the high schools.
