KOTA KINABALU: Sabah s has great potential to become the main economic gateway for the East Asean Growth Area, says Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili.
The Minister in the Prime Minister s Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs) said that the potential as the main gateway for trade, focusing mostly on the larger Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines under the East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) region.

Kota Kinabalu: The Covid-19 pandemic has shown members of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines – East Asean Growth Area (Bimp-Eaga) that many issues need to be rectified in order to survive, economically.

(pic) said a lesson learned from the pandemic experience was that human mobility is the source of all trade and income.
“Never rely too much on foreign tourists and domestic tourism is equally as important, no matter how small their numbers are. Increasing domestic infra-investments is also important to ensure government spending and liquidity.
“Last but not certainly not the least, never rely on wealth to import and strive for self-sufficiency to survive,” he said in his speech at the Special Bimp-Eaga Transport Cluster Meeting conducted via Zoom on Dec 21.
