no deaths to report, wishing that community all the best. thank you very much. for more now on how people are dealing with the aftermath of these powerful quakes i want to bring in the mayor of ridgecrest. mayor, thank you for being with us. i know your community has been through a lot the past couple days. now that you ve been able to survey the area and assess the situation, what can you tell us about the damage and injuries across the region? we have very few injuries, they re very minor. we ve had no deaths considering a 7.1 earthquake, the 5.6, we could have been much more devastated. we weren t. we have our buildings built to earthquake standards so consequently we are having no major damages. we had some structural issues we re dealing with and on inspection we have seven building inspects for going around as well as our building department and our planning team walking the city to see where
important. will you be staying in alaska? we re going to look at the situation, listen to the governor. our job also is to help alaskans here. it s great to go home and see people and see the damage and everything else but i m going to be in this position to respond to the needs. i can do that in my seat. we re going to figure that out at some point relatively soon. you guys talked about the forward planning as far as building codes and things like that may have played a role. may i say one thing? alaska has done well in this building code. we have the some of the residential homes are not the standard they should but they re not not falling down. the big buildings have survived well. the 64 quake that i went through, we had a lot of damage. every building after that has been built to earthquake standards where we have 32 feet sway in some of our buildings and still won t collapse.
