millions of people across turkey, syria, lebanon, cyprus and israel felt the earthquake. the united nations has called for an international response to the earthquakes. world leaders have pledged to send aid. but freezing temperatures are already hampering the aid effort. 0ur middle east correspondent anna foster arrived in turkey this morning and has spent the day travelling towards the epicentre close to the border with syria. she has sent this report from the town of 0smaniye, about 130 kilometres from the epicentre. running for their lives. shaken to their foundations, whole buildings fell. and across southern turkey, peace became panic. people helped where they could. this was a series of powerful earthquakes, notjust one. they were only around 20 kilometres under the surface, and shallow quakes cause the most damage. in towns and cities
injured in syria after that earthquake hit southern turkey. i m glad you brought that up. we re talking a lot about turkey because that s where the epicenter of this quake was. but especially a quake of this magnitude in this mart of the world the shaking goes on for a long way. and i m looking at the map now. northern syria. in aleppo they felt shaking equivalent to about a 6 between a 6 and a 6.5 magnitude earthquake. so that s significant shaking that they re going to have in northern syria as well. all the way down to lebanon. it was around a 4 to a 4.5 is the equivalence of the magnitude shaking that they felt. so we re talking a lot about turkey because that s where the epicenter shows up, you know, on the map. and certainly as you get closer to that epicenter the shaking is greater. that s where you re feeling the 7.5 and greater shaking.
