Eagle military members, families to be recognized during Military Appreciation Month | Newsroom

Eagle military members, families to be recognized during Military Appreciation Month April 28, 2021 Each May, individuals are encouraged to celebrate National Military Appreciation Month in a symbol of unity. Throughout the month, the Office of Military & Veteran Services (MVS) at Georgia Southern University will honor active and former members of the Armed Forces, as well as their dependents and spouses, who are part of the Eagle Nation family. “Here in Eagle Nation, we are so proud of our military, our veterans, our active duty, our Guard and Reserve members, our spouses of the military and children of the military,” said retired Col. George L. Fredrick, Ed.D., director of MVS. “It is truly an honor to recognize and commemorate our military-connected student population at Georgia Southern University. We are so proud to serve this wonderful community and to recognize them during this national celebration.”

Johnson & Johnson pause lifted, GS to continue distribution

After the FDA and CDC lifted a pause on Johnson & Johnson vaccine distribution Friday, Georgia Southern will begin offering the single-dose vaccine again on campus. “Now that pause has been lifted for the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, we are evaluating the best ways to make those doses available to our campus communities,” said John Lester, vice president of University Communications and Marketing. The FDA paused the vaccine earlier this month for 11 days after finding rare blood clotting in 15 of the 8 million people who received their shot, but the FDA and CDC decided the benefits outweigh the risks. “This pause was an example of our extensive safety-monitoring working as they were designed to work identifying even these small number of cases,” said Dr. Janet Woodcock, FDA commissioner in a statement. “We are confident that this vaccine continues to meet our standards for safety, effectiveness and quality.”
