On October 3, 1935 the forces of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini began their advance upon Ethiopia, known in earlier times as Abyssinia. Italy had long coveted the territory to expand their colonial influence in East Africa. In 1896, Ethiopians had turned back an Italian invasion at Adwa, serving as an example of a Black-led country’s defiance of Europe. Taking inspiration from Ethiopia’s long history as an independent Black nation, two Black aviators Hubert Julian and John C. Robinson were drawn to Ethiopia by the events of 1935.

Sheriff Rick Staly visited three local schools on Feb. 22 to present three exceptional students with awards for being “Great Kids” for the month of February 2021.
“We are proud of our youth and being able to continue to honor their hard work each month. Our February 2021 recipients are wonderful academically and as young leaders representing Flagler County,” Staly said. “The kids being awarded today are all doing exceptional things in their schools and throughout their communities. We appreciate the outstanding leadership and want them to know that the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is proud of their accomplishments, and we’re here to help them achieve their goals.”
i think we have nearly 140 years of experience at this airline the five of us, to be able to come up with a number that was 155 on january 15th. the flight 1549 incident and sully sullenberger got a lot of us thinking about experience. when we see very young people in the cockpit, what should we know about their training and their level of experience? i think the point is not how many hours someone has but what s happened during those hours? what kind of training has gone on? i visited the nation s oldest and largest aeronautical university. embry-riddle in florida to see how tomorrow s pilots are being prepared for their own gut-check moments. students here are constantly drilled in just about every type of emergency that could but rarely does come up. when something does happen, it s like muscle memory. they go back to a mental process
there s this annual quality ranking that aeronautical university does that tracks the four things that matter to a passenger s experience. on time performance, lost bags being involuntary bumped off a flight and customer complaints. those four things all got worse in 2014. and it s likely to get even worse. customer complaints just as an example frontier airlines had the most customer complaints or the worst ranking. but overall complaints went up 22% last year. and it s only going to get worse. jenna: what about the airlines themselves? are complaints coming in because they re cutting back staff not doing as well less profitable or just the opposite? airlines have had incredible profitability. pest performing stock last year in the s&p 500 was southwest airlines which more than doubled. so it s not an issue of their financial stability.
this. there is no shortcut to experience in aviation. a 630 hour pilot frankly would not be allowed to fly my single engine aircraft under the insurance rules. so why is that person sitting in the right seat of an airbus a320 a large complex aircraft with 150 passengers behind him? that just doesn t make sense. les, let me pipe in there. you ve flown a 777, does that make sense to you. no i know what miles is saying and gabrielle you featured in that clip is a great example of someone very motivated. however, she s well aware of the issues that face her. the incentive really out there is compensation and it s not there. you re going to spend $200,000 almost at embry riddle by the time four years is over to get out and make food stamp wages, mcdonald s manager makes more than that. and the problem is we re dealing with a gap. she graduated, she s very
