ASSEMBLYMEMBER ROBERT CARROLL on Tuesday announced that his Dyslexia Diagnosis Access Act passed the state Senate Insurance Committee; the first-in-the-nation bill would require private health insurance to pay for the neuropsychological exams needed to diagnose dyslexia, which are currently not commonly covered and may cost more than $6,000.
About 1,500 students were screened for risk of dyslexia last school year. Experts say the city’s assessments don’t reveal much that schools don’t already know.
