BMW s M performance division no longer builds standard M cars. For many buyers, models like the M3, M4, and M5 provide the ideal balance between high performance and daily drivers. But the true M enthusiast always wants something more, and the folks at Munich have responded with their CS (Club Sport) models, such as the amazing M2 CS.
And now the 2022 BMW M5 CS sedan has arrived, a lighter, more powerful version of the already impressive F90 generation M5. Like all CS models, the new M5 CS focuses on two major things: additional power and reducing weight. Engineers have managed to accomplish both and then some.

We knew beforehand the 2022 BMW M5 CS will literally blow away the competition. BMW went to Instagram before the new year and unveiled some juicy tidbits on its latest M5 CS ‘Competition Sport’ sedan, promising more power, less weight, and maximum driving enjoyment.
The new BMW M5 CS is the fastest and most powerful iteration of the seventh-generation 5-Series. It has the same 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine as a standard M5 and M5 Competition model. But with two oil pumps, a liquid-to-air intercooler, and high-pressure direct injection, the M5 CS produces 627 horsepower and a healthy 553 pound-feet of torque, ten horses more than the bonkers M5 Competition.

When BMW M first developed the M5 back in the mid ’80s, the goal was simple; stuff a motorsport-derived engine into a family sedan and create the greatest all-around, dual-purpose driving machine in the world. At the time, that’s exactly what the E28 M5 was. It was faster than a Porsche 911 yet seated five, had electric power everything, a comfy ride and an interior fit for a king.
Over the years, performance has increase but the goal hasn’t changed; its duality, the ability to be both performance car and luxury car, is still at the forefront of the M5’s design brief. But what if it wasn’t? What if BMW decided that it might be more fun to take the family for a track day instead of a road trip? What if the brilliant psychopaths in Garching made a BMW M5 CS?
BMW has proclaimed the 2022 M5 CS Sedan, with 627 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, to be the quickest and most powerful BMW production vehicle ever produced, with a claimed 0-60 time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 190 MPH. It will arrive in the U.S. in the second half of 2021.
Having recently updated the M5 for 2021, the M5 CS adds more power, performance, and all-important interior appointment exclusivity, and is 230 pounds less than the M5 Competition. Liberal use of CFRP materials boosts the power-to-weight ratio of an already-high M5, since the M5 CS’ S63 4.4-liter M TwinPower turbo V8 only netted 10 HP more than the M5. The torque band is more impressive, with 553 lb-ft from 1,800 to 5,950 rpm, wider than the M5 Competition by 90 rpm. Redline is 7,200 rpm, with high-pressure, direct fuel injection, liquid-to-air intercooling for the twin turbos, and an oil system with two pumps.
