A petition has been launched to oppose the removal of an historic ship that has become a centre of youth and music on Wellington waterfront.
The residents and owner of the Sealion, a former minesweeper docked at Queen’s Wharf, have been told by the Wellington City Council it will be towed away by April 21.
Sealion resident and gig promoter Dylan Pyle said the decision was not fair because none of the residents were consulted face to face.
That s why the City Council – who are taking over the mooring contracts on the Wharf – has decided not to offer one to the Sealion. The ship has had many lives since it was built in Adelaide in 1945. It was meant to be a World War II supply ship but the war ended before it was finished. It went on to be a mine sweeper, squid fishing ship and a houseboat.

Docked in Wellington Harbour for about 20 years, the Sealion has a new owner, a new name and a new purpose (Video first published September 2020). Now, quirkily painted with hundreds of penguins and a few sealions, the vessel – sporting a shabby-chic look – has become a rental property, and a self-described community and arts space.
