There is a specific moment when a feeling of bewilderment and inspiration hits the people who walk into UAB football’s new stadium in downtown Birmingham.
It’s when they first walk up the steps of the pavilion on the north side of the stadium and gaze southward out across the field and the city and then Red Mountain beyond. From that vantage point, people see more than a construction site in downtown Birmingham. They’re looking out into the future.

It’s been three months since the UAB football team ended a most unusual season in the most unusual way.
Despite winning a second conference championship in three years, the Blazers were unable to finish the 2020 season in style South Carolina withdrew from the Gasparilla Bowl less than a week before it was scheduled but are back on the field as they opened spring practice, Tuesday, March 16, in Legacy Pavilion at the UAB Football Operations Complex in Birmingham.
“We always look for great organization and that’s the first thing I told them,” UAB head coach Bill Clark said. “That’s why I look for all the little things: Do they come out properly equipped? Are their minds right? We got high expectations for this group. For us, it’s can we practice in the manner we want to practice with everybody getting better and protecting each other. I saw that today.”

Just give Bill Clark his honorary doctorate in history because the UAB head coach keeps making his own after leading an underdog UAB football team on the road to its second league title in program history.
The Blazers (6-3, 4-1 C-USA) put together a first-half defensive masterpiece and bullied their way on the ground to a 22-13 win over the Marshall Thundering Herd in the 2020 Ryan Conference USA Championship, Friday, Dec. 18, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia.
UAB produced 468 total yards of offense with a balanced attack that saw the running game and passing attack work in-tandem against the top scoring defense and second-ranked total defense in the nation.

No games played in more than a month? A slow start that snowballed into a second-half masterpiece.
Only 42 scholarship payers available, due to positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing, and the top receiver leaving the team before the end of the season? Dip into a deep running back pool and watch a walk-on receiver reel in a 42-yard touchdown catch for his first career reception to take an 8-point lead midway through the third quarter.
