William Borgen skated with the Sabres on Tuesday and could return to the lineup against the Boston Bruins on Thursday, interim head coach Don Granato said.
Borgen has missed the last 31 games after having surgery to repair a fracture in his right arm. The injury occurred while blocking a shot on the penalty kill against New Jersey on Feb. 22.
The defenseman managed to finish the game, skating a career-high 19:14.

The Buffalo Sabres battled to the end, but Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry stayed strong until the end.
Buffalo s comeback efforts fell short in a 3-2 loss at KeyBank Center on Saturday. Jarry made 28 saves to earn the victory.
Tage Thompson and Casey Mittelstadt scored for Buffalo. Dustin Tokarski made 38 saves in net.
Jared McCann, Evan Rodrigues and Bryan Rust were Pittsburgh s goal scorers.
Buffalo went 1-for-1 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.
What happened
Right after Tokarski steered a shot into the corner, McCann fired it back toward the net from behind the goal line, were it leaked in shortside to put Pittsburgh ahead 1-0 with 9:30 remaining in the first period.

Arttu Ruotsalainen signed his entry-level contract with the Sabres in May 2019, coming off a breakout year with Ilves of the Finnish Elite League that saw him score a team-high 21 goals in 42 games.
His focus ever since - through two training camps in Buffalo, parts of two more seasons in Finland and now 13 AHL games with the Rochester Americans - has been on rounding out his game for the NHL.
With a chance now potentially around the corner, the forward said he feels ready to make the leap.
