CHARLESTON, W.Va. Members of the West Virginia National Guard have been in Washington, D.C. previously to assist with the security of presidential inaugurations and State of the Union addresses, but this month’s insurrection at the U.S. Capitol has changed the overall effort.
Around 25,000 National Guard troops will be in the nation’s capital in the wake of the Jan. 6 violence, in which supporters of President Donald Trump led a riot at the legislative building, halting the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. Five people died in the incident.
