Education board created to drive school improvement

Coun. Wayne Daley. An education strategy board is being set up in Northumberland with the aim of driving improvements in the county’s schools. The initiative was considered by the county council’s family and children’s services committee at its meeting on Thursday, January 7, where it was welcomed by members. The report to councillors set out that Northumberland has made significant progress in recent years in improving the outcomes for children and young people and that the upward trend has seen the county move up national and regional league tables. However, ‘there remain some issues of challenge and concern, including the disadvantage gap, inclusion agenda and sufficiency planning’.

Property guardian scheme working well at former West Woodburn First School

A PROPERTY guardian scheme is ‘working well’ at a former North Tyne school. West Woodburn First School closed in May of last year, when it had no pupils on its books and none registered for September’s intake. Northumberland County Council’s cabinet unanimously approved plans to close the rural school after a series of four-week consultations. It came after the council had received just one representation against the proposed closure from a member of the public who had no obvious connection to the school, according to Coun. Wayne Daley. The building is now listed by Ad Hoc Property Management as a two-bed, shared accommodation to rent under a ‘property guardian scheme’, which sees people protect vacant buildings by simply living in them.
