American Idol fans are none too pleased after Monday s episode featured last season s contestants returning for their shot to perform live on stage in what Ryan Seacrest called the biggest shakeup in the show s history.
The comeback episode saw 10 former contestants who were unable to perform on the show s main stage in 2020 due to coronavirus limitations were brought back on Monday for a chance to snag a spot in this season s top 10.
While judge Katy Perry appeared to be on board with the last-minute shuffle, it created quite the upheaval among viewers at home who found it to be a ripoff to this season s current contestants.
Ten favorites take the stage before a physical audience for the first time and get a second chance at their Idol dream.
They lit up the stage during Mondayâs performances, bringing their A-game to convince viewers theyâre worthy of a vote. But it makes us wonder, is it fair to let past competitors back into the game, especially since theyâve already made it as finalists in the past?
While it would seem like special treatment, the concession makes some sense due to the fact that
American Idolâs last season was disrupted due to COVID-19. The unprecedented situation definitely jostled the normal order of things, leaving finalists to produce TV-level performances from the comfort of home by themselves.
“American Experience: American Oz,” 9-11 p.m., PBS. After a blissful childhood, Frank Baum dreamed big, often with his dad’s financial backing. He raised thoroughbred chickens; he wrote, produced and starred in a touring musical. In South Dakota, he tried a high-end store and then a newspaper that went from feminism to proposing Indian annihilation. He failed often and then, in his 40s, succeeded with children’s short tales … a window-dressers’ magazine … and “The Wizard of Oz.”
“9-1-1” and “9-1-1: Lone Star” return, 8 and 9 p.m., Fox. After five-week breaks, the shows deal with horrific car accidents. In “9-1-1,” the team races to the rescue, amid other key moments: Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) goes into labor; the devastated Hen and Karen prepare their foster daughter to be reunited with her birth mother. In “Lone Star,” Judd (a firefighter) and his wife Grace (a 9-1-1 operator) linger near death, as flashbacks show how they met and fell in love.

American Idol revealed its top 16 on Sunday night, but when the top 10 is set, it’ll look somewhat familiar.
That’s because, for the first time, the show is bringing back 10 contestants from last season to compete for the final spot in the top 10. The “comeback contestants” will sing for America’s vote on the show’s April 19 episode, and voting will continue through April 26. At the end, one will be left standing to go head-to-head with this year’s hopefuls.
Among the returning contestants is
Arthur Gunn, who was last year’s runner-up; he lost to
