DVUR KRALOVE, CZECH REPUBLIC: We humans may be tiring of video calls, Zoom birthdays and streamed performances, but the chimps at two Czech zoos are just starting to enjoy their new live online linkup.
To make up for the lack of interaction with visitors since the attractions closed in December under COVID-19 restrictions, the chimpanzees at Safari Park Dvur Kralove and the troop at a zoo in Brno, 150 km away, can now watch one another s daily lives on giant screens.

Najin and Fatu are the last two northern white rhinos on the planet and they are both female and cannot carry pregnancies.
Scientists around the world are now in a race against time to save the species at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia in Kenya. Having the last two northern white rhino is a clear symbol of what extinction means and because these animals are not able to speak for themselves, we act as their voice, said Zacharia Mutai, Northern White rhino keeper, at Ol Pejeta.
How to save a species
The plan is to use eggs harvested by the two females and sperm collected from male northern whites saved before they died.

Following age-related complications, Sudan the last male northern white rhinoceros alive was euthanized by a team of vets in Kenya in March 2018. Sudan, who was 45 years old at the time, was one of only three northern white rhinos left on earth and the last male of his subspecies. For years, Sudan had represented the final hope for the survival of his kind, but before his death scientists came up with a back-up plan: Collecting Sudan s sperm so that they might be able to continue his genetic line even after his death.
Northern white rhino numbers dwindled from 2000 in 1960 to only three in recent years. Those last survivors, Sudan, his daughter Najin, and granddaughter Fatu, lived together at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. Each animal had physical issues making it difficult for them to breed, and with Sudan gone, a new generation of northern white rhinos looks even less likely.
