JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The woman seen in a viral video giving the finger to another shopper then coughing in her face at a Jacksonville mall has been sentenced to 29 days in jail for assault.
The decision ended several hours of testimony and questions Thursday in the sentencing hearing of Debra Jo Michele Hunter, the woman from Fernandina Beach, outside of Jacksonville, Florida. It came despite an August plea agreement that had consisted of only probation with conditions.
Duval County Court Judge James Ruth first heard testimony from Hunter s husband, friends and family who said she has a really huge heart and is broken-hearted over how she coughed on cancer patient Heather Sprague. But after they spoke on behalf of Hunter, Sprague told the judge about the confrontation that happened only months after she underwent brain tumor surgery.

A Florida woman was sentenced to 30 days in jail for intentionally coughing on a cancer patient during the pandemic.
According to The Associated Press, the incident took place in June 2020 at a Pier 1 location in Jackson, Florida, where Debra Hunter was filmed arguing with store employees. Customer Heather Sprague began filming the altercation with her phone before Hunter threatened to cough on her.
“Do you really need this? What do you want me to do? Post it for you?” Hunter asks Sprague, referring to the video recording.
Hunter then flips Sprague off and proceeds to walk toward her, saying, “I think I’ll just get real close to you and cough on you then. How’s that?” Hunter then gets in Sprague’s face and coughs on her before uttering “asshole” as she walks away.
