Fewer Breast Cancer Cases Between Screening Rounds with 3-D Mammography

Fewer Breast Cancer Cases Between Screening Rounds with 3-D Mammography Getty Images April 9, 2021   3-D mammography reduces the number of breast cancer cases diagnosed in the period between routine screenings, when compared with traditional mammography, according to a large study from Lund University in Sweden. The results are published in the journal  Our results indicate that 3-D mammography, or digital breast tomosynthesis, possibly detects cancers that would otherwise have been diagnosed later at a more advanced stage , said Kristin Johnson, doctoral student at Lund University and radiology resident at Skåne University Hospital. A large prospective screening study conducted at Skåne University Hospital in Malmö (Malmö Breast Tomosynthesis Screening Trial) between 2010 and 2015 included almost 15,000 women who received both 3-D mammography and traditional mammography. In 2018, the researchers published results from the trial showing that 3-D mammography detects just o

Simple MRI Measurement Could Avoid 30% of Breast Biopsies

Simple MRI Measurement Could Avoid 30% of Breast Biopsies Scientific findings are instantly applicable in clinical practice March 9, 2021   Breast cancer is the most common fatal cancer in women. Early detection increases a woman s chances of recovery. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an accurate technique for detecting and classifying tumors in breast tissue. However, it sometimes causes false alarms , thus requiring further investigation (biopsy) and in some cases even resulting in so-called overtreatment, that is to say unnecessary surgery. For the first time, a research team from MedUni Vienna has now confirmed a threshold value for a non-invasive imaging biomarker. This can be incorporated into short standard MRI scans and could reduce the biopsy rate following MRI scans by 30%. Since the infrastructure for this measurement already exists in every radiological facility in Austria, the biomarker could be immediately deployed countrywide.

Use of Breast MRI Screening in Women With Dense Breasts

Use of Breast MRI Screening in Women With Dense Breasts Interview with Professor Christiane Kuhl, M.D., director of radiology, University Hospital Aachen, Germany, on the use of MRI breast screenings A comparison of standard mammography imaging (left) in a woman with dense breasts and a breast MRI imaging study (right) showing a clearly defined cancer and is extremely hard to detect on the mammograms. Images from Christiane Kuhl, M.D. Dense breast tissue can hide cancers in mammograms in about half of women. Supplemental imaging is often needed to accurately diagnose these patients, avoid false positives and avoid needless tissue biopsies. Breast ultrasound and breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to see through dense tissue to better identify cancers and avoid the need for many biopsies, however, MRI offers more specificity.
