DVIDS - News - Thirty-day public comment period for Dutch Gap ecosystem restoration project begins today

3 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Chicago District has released for public comment the Draft Integrated Detailed Project Report and Environmental Assessment for the Dutch Gap ecosystem restoration project located in Antioch, Lake County, Illinois. Dutch Gap has suffered decades of intensive agriculture. This included altering the site’s hydrology via installing vast drain tile networks, excavating ditches, channelizing streams, and disturbing native soils. The 785-acre study area resides south of the Wisconsin state border line, north of W Pedersen Dr., east of US-45 N, and west of N Crawford Road. The Lake County Forest Preserve District is working with the Corps to reestablish natural hydrologic and hydraulic parameters and native plant communities to support critical wetland and riparian habitats within the Dutch Gap natural area.
