Labour s Kim McGuinness has retained her position as Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC).
She won 60% of the vote ahead of Tory Duncan Crute, Lib Dem Peter Maughan and independent Julian Kilburn.
She said: There is a lot of work to do. It is not a molehill, it s a mountain we have to climb and I think we need to get on to it straight away.
No candidate scored the required 50% or more of first choice votes on Thursday so second preferences were then taken into account.
In the first round, Ms McGuinness secured 179,021 (47%) votes ahead of Mr Crute s 118,543 (31%), Mr Kilburn s 45,567 (12%) and Mr Maughan s 40,955 (10%). Some 1,600 ballots were rejected.

A Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner hopeful has warned violent crime could soar in the North East after the Government slashed funding by 40%.
Four candidates will contest next month’s Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections. Voters in the North-East are going to the polls on May 6 and, as well choosing local councillors, will have the chance to elect a PCC for the fourth time. The Northumbria post, first established in 2012, has been held by Labour’s Kim McGuinness since 2019, when she won a by-election following the resignation of Dame Vera Baird. Ms McGuinness, a former Newcastle councillor, has three opponents as she seeks to retain her post – Conservative Duncan Crute, the Lib Dems’ Peter Maughan, and independent Julian Kilburn. The vote had been due to be held in May 2020, but was postponed by a year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
