“This report tells a story of which no American is proud.”
Unnamed, Presumably Now Mortified, US State Department Employee
Indeed, the faceless employee was referring to the story of the CIA’s systematic use of torture to interrogate prisoners, but he could well be referring to his own story today.
Someone in the White House emailed his Talking Points to the Associated Press, which wasted no time in publishing them with commentary.
I suppose this is a rare example of humility coming before a fall.
According to the AP, the email was not a leak but an accident; it is then, an accidental leak, but nonetheless a leak. The Talking Points are meant as a response to the soon-to-be-released Senate report on their investigation into the subject. That report, recall, is apparently already in the hands of the CIA, although it has not yet been released.
