Zigzagging pla noofr th ingin g were taught to avoid being hit by a torpedo. In essence, it is like not being hit by a sniper. In doing this they came across an area called Diamond Shoals. Though the shells werent doing that much damage, the bottom of the ocean did. So it slammed into the shoals and ran aground and was stuck hard aground and still being shelled. Now during the process of this, the Diamond Shoals life ship this was a purposebuilt light ship built in 1899, was anchored over Diamond Shoals for the specific pumps of warning ships that you can run aground there. World war i centennial symposiu is on its lunch break. F until they return were joined by Sean Mcmeekin, author of july 1914 countdown to war. Mr. Mcmeekin appreciate you orlw joining us on American History tv. Sponsibl thank you for having me. Its a pleasure to be here. I think certainly if there had been a different president in the white house, possibly theodore roosevelt, might have n taken a different line. He was quite clear about the fact in 1914 that i think he saw the germans as, if not necessarily to blame
These are some to have current t selling Nonfiction Book withs according to the washington post. Booktv asked, what are you reading this summer . I brought some books that i have recently realize that i thought people might really like, and the first one is by scott berg called wilson. And it is a new biography of Woodrow Wilson and, actually, a very favorable and thoughtful volume. Scott berg took 13 years of meticulous scholarship to write this book, and it shows. Its one of the most thoughtful, balanced biographies of this very complex figure and progressive figure in American History who had his own contradictions. But i think it gives you some really new insights and new appreciation for Woodrow Wilson, a very pivotal figure in the history of the american presidency and just a delightful read. And i absolutely recommend it. One of the best biographies ive read in a long time. Another book is by a professor at the university of virginia and a former neighbor of mine, a wonderful sc
