A woman and her two-year-old daughter were critically injured in an attack by a tusker in Kalunga forest section on Sunday. The tusker had killed a 43-year-old farmer in Birda forest section in the wee hours of Sunday before it walked into Kalunga and attacked the duo. The woman was identified as Padmini Toppo (22), a resident of Duitola Tungritola in Kalunga forest section under Kuanmurnda forest range. On Sunday around 7am, she was on her way to her mother’s house, located close by, when the elephant kicked Padmini and her daughter, who was in her arms, also got injured. The duo is currently hospitalised in Rourkela. “The tusker is now in Jodakudar khetra forest and we are a keeping watch on its movement,” K Kothi, forester (Kalunga forest section), said.
