BANNER ELK â The Banner Elk Town Council reconvened for its monthly meeting on Monday, May 10, in a hybrid session, in which council members and the town manager discussed several bills in the General Assembly that could potentially limit the zoning authority of local municipalities.
The eveningâs agenda began with a public comment from Ted Silver, chairman of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, who asked the council to consider adopting a proclamation recognizing May as National Bike Month, as well as the 11th year of the International Ride of Silence.

The 2021-22 session began in late January. Expect COVID-19 and the ongoing fallout from the pandemic to be top priorities for lawmakers, who are crafting a new budget for the biennium. They’ll also draw new legislative and congressional maps for the next decade based on fresh census data. Each legislator, too, has their own priorities.
Avery s Dudley Greene Takes Oath As District 85 Representative
Greene will serve House District 85 which includes Avery, Mitchell, and McDowell counties.
This will be Greene’s first term in the North Carolina General Assembly.
Greene said he was honored to serve the area he calls home.
The Opening Day Ceremony marked the official start of the 2021-22 legislative session. Legislators took the oath of office, agreed upon chamber rules for the session and elected leadership for each chamber.
The legislature is scheduled to return on January 27 to begin the long session.
