SNOW has fallen in recent days, although for many people across Bury, it has been a mere layer of frost. Just over half a century ago, however, the town was brought to a standstill by the devastating affects of snow. Ice, snow and winds pounded the borough as Bury was hit with the worst blizzards for 14 years in February, 1969. The Arctic blast sealed off farms and villages behind eight foot snow drifts, crashed down power and telephone lines and damaged buildings . At the blizzard s height, disaster struck and a double decker bus was flung across the road into a wall near The Duckworth Arms hotel in Ramsbottom.
