Labelling 2020 a rollercoaster year for the markets doesn’t do justice to fairground rides. Markets plunged in the spring as coronavirus hit, and although much of the wider losses have been recovered, when it comes to individual equities as always there have been some notable laggards and a few surprise leaders.

The Daily Telegraph team’s picks for 2020 beat the market, with the portfolio declining 1.3pc overall. This was calculated purely on share price change over the year, averaged out across our picks, and discounting dividends – or lack of them.
