Fertilizer Prices Mainly Lower; Anhydrous Fertilizer Drops 15%

A majority of retail fertilizer prices are again lower after being mostly higher last week. Two fertilizers lead the way lower. Anhydrous was 15% less expensive than last month with an average price of $791/ton. Urea was 6% lower than last month with an average price of $622/ton.

Fertilizer Prices Mostly Higher for First Time Since November

For the first time in roughly six months, most retail fertilizer prices are higher compared to last month. Five of the eight major fertilizers are now more expensive compared to last month. One fertilizer, urea, showed a significant increase. The nitrogen fertilizer is 5% higher compared to last month with an average price of $623/ton.

Most Fertilizer Prices Lower Again Third Week of May 2023

Most retail fertilizer prices continue to move lower. Five of the eight major fertilizers are now less expensive compared to last month. Only one fertilizer, anhydrous, showed a significant decline. The nitrogen fertilizer is 10% lower with an average price of $895 per ton.

Fertilizer Prices Moving in Two Directions

Retail fertilizer prices are moving in opposite directions. Half the fertilizer prices are higher, led by urea, which was 6% more expensive compared to last month with an average price of $664 per ton. The other half are lower, led by anhydrous, which was 9% less expensive than a month ago with an average price of $910 per ton.

University Research Casts Skepticism on Nitrogen-Fixing Biologicals

In a recently published summary of 61 nitrogen rate trials with and without biological nitrogen-fixing products, less than 4% resulted in yield increases with the use of the products compared to nitrogen alone. The trials were conducted by researchers at 10 land-grant universities.
