Sports are so ubiquitous in human life that it would almost seem natural to eventually include surfing in the Olympics. Like other sports, there are contests, points, a final and a winner. But surfing separates itself from the rest in that it requires cooperation from Mother Nature, who plays by her own set of rules. Add in subjective judging, and you get the imperfect sport of competition surfing. Understandably, it rarely does what it sets out to do, which is to determine the best surfer.
Surfing’s debut in the Tokyo Olympics won’t be spared from these shortcomings.
