Flood risk in North-East and North Yorkshire due to rain and melting snow

Flood warnings and alerts were issued overnight and remain in place today (Tuesday, January 12) for parts of the North-East and North Yorkshire FLOOD warnings have been issued for parts of the region due to rising river levels caused by rainfall and melting snow. The Environment Agency issued a series of flood alerts last night and some warnings have already been activated, mostly around Teesside and North Yorkshire. Showers overnight and this morning have seen flood warnings put in place at various locations on the Rivers Esk, Seven, Derwent and Ouse. The areas of concern included properties in Lealholm, adjacent to the River Esk, and people were urged to avoid using low lying footpaths and roads near local watercourses, from Briggswath to Ruswarp.

Flood warnings remain in force as river levels remain high

FLOOD warnings remain in force in Ryedale as river levels are expected to remain high throughout this week. The Environment Agency (EA) is urging people to avoid low-lying footpaths and roads near rivers which may be flooded as response staff continue to monitor the situation. Emergency pumps have also been placed in Malton, Norton and Old Malton and floodgates closed, along with the pedestrian floodgates along riverside walk between Malton and Norton. A spokesperson for the EA said: “River levels remain high in most places as a result of rainfall associated with Storm Bella and further rainfall overnight. “Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is expected to continue today, (Tuesday).
