Mogwai – As The Love Continues review: cinematic post-rock loses steam

Credit: Antony Crook Mogwai have evolved into a collective of reputable soundtrack composers over the last 15 years. Ever since they first scored the captivating Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait documentary in 2006, which tracked the movements of the eccentric ex-French footballer during a 90 minute match, the Scottish post-rockers have built up an impressive portfolio that includes the haunting Les Revenants soundtrack in 2013 and, more recently, Sky Italian crime drama ZeroZeroZero. The first four tracks on their 10th studio album ‘As The Love Continues’ furrow that same moody cinematic path. 25 years. That’s how long Mogwai have quietly (and loudly) been doling out guitar-heavy detonation at the stamp of a Stuart Braithwaite overdrive pedal. After all that time, there’s undoubtedly a method to Mogwai, but the beautiful noise they’ve made over the years has only stood because of their dedication to reimagining the potential of sheer volume and plunging walls of noise. As The Love Continues has all of their hallmarks (the plaintive lulls, the booming peaks, the whirling anger) but as tried-and-trusted as those structures are, there are a few unexpected subtleties that make Mogwai’s tenth album a surprising listen.

With touring on hold, Scotland’s sons of guitar anarchy and DIY synth splendour released two pay-what-you-will digital albums in the last year, a live belter (2018) and a lush score (ZeroZeroZero).
