Calls for support for Covid-hit Indian factories Retailers are being urged to support their Indian suppliers as a devastating second wave of Covid has caused factories to close and threatens workers well-being. On 1 May, India became the first country in the world to report more than 400,000 new Covid cases in a single 24-hour period and the following day it recorded 3,689 deaths – its highest death toll since the pandemic began. The UK government has sent aid in the last fortnight, including 1,200 ventilators, 495 oxygen concentrators and three oxygen-generation units, to help meet shortages. While there is no national lockdown in place in India, two-week lockdowns have been put in place in heavily affected areas, including Delhi and Karnataka, both of which have prominent garment manufacturing districts.

Paula Nickolds joins Sainsbury s

Nickolds replaces Mike Luck, who joined Sainsbury s on its graduate scheme 18 years ago. Luck will stay with the supermarket group until mid-July to help with the transition period. Nickolds will be responsible for the commercial success of Sainsbury’s £7.8bn general merchandise and clothing business. This includes Sainsbury’s general merchandise, Tu clothing, Argos and  Habitat. Previously, Paula spent 25 years at the John Lewis Partnership, after joining as a graduate trainee she worked in product, buying, brand and commercial before becoming managing director in 2017 until January last year. Sosandar appoints new CFO

Sosandar appoints new CFO Steve Dilks will join the company’s board as CFO with immediate effect. Dilks joined Sosandar in September 2020 as finance director, after spending 11 years with outdoor clothing company Regatta in the same role. In addition, Mark Collingbourne, group finance director, will transition to the position of non-executive director with immediate effect. Collingbourne had been group financial director at Sosandar since its IPO in 2017.
