WASHINGTON People depending on unemployment benefits continued to wait for payments on Wednesday after two key programs expired over the weekend before President Donald Trump signed a $900 billion pandemic relief package.
The stimulus plan passed by Congress earlier this month extends the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) programs, which assist people who had COVID-19 related job losses or reduction in incomes.

Unemployment Benefits Expire As COVID Relief Bill Remains In Limbo Syndicated Local – CBS Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) Unemployment benefits for millions of Americans expired overnight as a result of President Donald Trump’s refusal to sign the relief bill passed by Congress.
Trump rejected the massive COVID relief and government funding bill despite Congress approving the measures, and the White House negotiating it. On Saturday, Trump tweeted:
“I simply want to get our people $2,000, rather than the measly $600 that is now in the bill. Also, stop the millions of dollars in “pork.” Trump has no Republican support for this change, and is in line with Democrats on the issue who have been pushing to increase direct payments to those requiring jobless benefits.
James hasn’t received his unemployment benefits in 78 days.
After being laid off from his bartending jobs at Streets Market and Cranes in March, he successfully applied for unemployment insurance. His benefits ran out after 26 weeks, as is customary, so he applied for Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation, a 13-week extension of benefits the federal government pays under the CARES Act.
Despite placing more than 300 calls and sending more than 100 emails to unemployment offices in D.C. and Virginia, the Ward 8 resident has yet to see a cent. (James is a pseudonym because he fears being named would mean the unemployment offices would stop returning his emails altogether.)
