The registry of certified special educators trained to teach children with special needs is rife with discrepancies that show people being certified without proper scrutiny of documents they submit. Parents of such children have complained to the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), the authority that maintains the special educators registry, but to no avail. Many of these special educators got their degree or diploma in special education in the 1990s or early 2000. They haven t done anything after that to update their knowledge. A lot has changed in the understanding of intellectual disabilities like autism and Down syndrome and there are constant advances in the techniques of teaching such children, but these people continue with the old methods and it shows in their teaching, said the parent of a child with autism spectrum disorder.
