Findings from an outside consultant group hired by the state to look at the challenges posed to businesses in downtown Northampton amid the coronavirus pandemic paint a bleak picture for the typically bustling area.

Northampton’s primary business district wasn’t immune to the economic effects of the COVID-19 public health crisis, according to Karl Alexander, a project planner for Civic Space Collaborative. The pandemic caused a 50% decline in vehicle traffic and a 41% decrease in foot traffic in the Pioneer Valley city’s downtown.

NORTHAMPTON The city is getting closer to making the proposed community resilience hub a reality after Mayor David Narkewicz announced Thursday that he has executed an option to purchase the historic Roundhouse building behind Pulaski Park.
The news, which he delivered to the City Council, came on the same day Smith College pledged $200,000 toward the creation of the hub, which would support residents who face chronic and acute stress, such as those who are homeless, and act as an emergency center if there is a disaster.

Downtown Northampton, where walkers and bikers intermingle with cars and buses among restaurants, retail shops and bars, is on its way to a major update.
City planners presented four options to the public Wednesday night for a redesign of a half-mile of Northampton’s social and economic center. Under the title “Picture Main Street,” the project would modify the sidewalks, traffic flow and landscape of the city center.
