Hendersonville business owner named NC 2020 Main Street Champion
Hendersonville Times-News
Michele Sparks, owner of Art Mob Studios & Marketplace in downtown Hendersonville, has been named a North Carolina 2020 Main Street Champion.
Sparks was one of 38 volunteers recognized by the state s Main Street Program for their commitment to downtown revitalization and strong communities during a virtual recognition ceremony on March 11, according to a city news release.
Sparks opened her business in 2011 as an outlet for artisans to sell their work. She began representing 25 artists and now represents 86 from across Western North Carolina. Sparks has been involved in every area of downtown, from volunteering with events like Rhythm & Brews to organizing the Art on Main festival and supporting the ArtScape outdoor art gallery program, the release states.
“They found a lot of really great success expanding into those spaces, Downtown Manager Jamie Carpenter said,
City staff will draft a policy for outdoor dining, by working with Oklawaha Brewing and Hannah Flanagan’s to develop parameters for “appearance, stormwater drainage, traffic flow, visibility, etc.” After six months, a Sidewalk Dining Ordinance will be proposed, allowing for the development of further outdoor dining.
Beyond the current makeshift dining situation at both restaurants, the project aims to develop semi-permanent structures to facilitate sidewalk dining. In September, UNC Greensboro and the NC Main Street Program partnered to have architecture students create renderings for Covid-19 response projects. From then through December, the city worked with Oklawaha Brewing, UNCG, contractors and the city s public works department to plan these semi-permanent dining structures.
