By Marie K Tomlin May 20, 2021 The Shepherd s Men Run 22-hour event to bring awareness to veteran suicide will be held Tuesday, May 25 through Wednesday, May 26 in Downtown Lynchburg. The Shepherd’s Men is a 10-member team of active duty, medically retired and honorably discharged servicemen, and civilian patriots dedicated to raising funds and awareness for PTSD and TBI treatment at the Atlanta-based Shepherd Center’s SHARE Military Initiative. The Shepherd’s Men Run is a seven-day, seven-city physical challenge during which each member of the Shepherd’s Men team will run while wearing 22-pound flak vests with armor plates to honor the lives of the 22 veterans lost to suicide in the US every day.

Eleven-year-old Jamarius Burneson wanted to buy something for his mother’s gravesite, not only because it’s his mom. “[But] because Jesus wants me to go, so I follow that,” said Jamarius. His biological mother, Alfreda, died in 2019 after a battle with diabetes. She was 33 years old. Jamarius’ adoptive mom, Pattie Burneson, says he has autism and diagnosed with PTSD. But that doesn’t stop the fifth grader.
