What was your upbringing and what brought you to the Killeen area?
Iâve lived in Killeen my entire life and this is home. My parents came to Killeen in the early 70âs from Puerto Rico with $20 and a suitcase of clothes. My father was a mechanic and we grew up in Downtown Killeen. I love our cityâs rich diversity and willingness to come together in times of need and crisis. These qualities have drawn me to volunteer and become more involved with our community in the past decade. My wife is also a small business owner (A&K Dance and Acro) and together we look forward to raising our daughter here.
On Monday, International Womenâs Day, a Killeen-based nonprofit offered gifts and snacks to all women who stopped by.
âItâs been on and off,â said Dr. Sherita McQueen, director of the She Will Foundation, based in downtown Killeen. âI think people were waiting to come in on lunch break.â
The event took place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., at the foundationâs new office at 402 Eighth Street. Donuts, lotions, self care items and others were given away, as long as supplies lasted.
In addition to resume and job placement assistance, the foundation works to help area women who need help with rent, groceries and other areas.
AR Kares 4 All, a local nonprofit organization, is hosting the first of its monthly food giveaways for 2021 on Jan. 22 in the parking lot of the former H-E-B in downtown Killeen.
Everyone is invited to the parking lot, 809 N. Gray St., from noon to 3 p.m. that day to get a food box of around 20 pounds of food.
The nonprofit was started by local business owner Maricello Brown, who hosted a food giveaway around Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve.
At the Christmas distribution, the organization gave out 150 boxes of food that continued meats, crackers, cookies, breads and other food.
